Sean
Huston
Hello and welcome to the Voices
of Harmony website!
My name is Sean, I am a third generation
baritone, and proud of it! My grandfather sang popular tunes of his day
at weddings and social events throughout the interior of British Columbia. My father was a
concert level pianist at UBC, and sang with the Vancouver Chamber Choir.
As you would expect, I grew up singing. I started as a child soprano in
family and church musical productions. Later in high school, my music
teacher Janine McNichol put together my first quartet "The Shadows”
with three friends from my Jazz choir.
In the fall of 1995, a roommate heard me
singing in the shower and dragged me to a barbershop chorus rehearsal.
That visit to the chorus resulted in the creation of my second quartet,
“High Country Harmony” that stayed together for well over four
years. By the time, I departed Kamloops
in 2002, I had rejuvenated the local barbershop chorus, sung with the quartets
“SARV”, “4 Ryme Sake”, “Powerhouse” and
“Last One Standing”, attended Harmony College Northwest twice, and
competed in several contests with my quartets.
In 2001, I attended a seminar in Kamloops led by Charlie
Metzger on directing technique. In 2003, I attended the first three
months of Charlie Metzger's “Director of the Future” program.
During my time as a director in training, I was able to direct the Gentlemen of
Fortune in public performance. I have been leading the music program with
the Voices of Harmony chorus since the summer of 2006, and look forward to
bringing to them a positive, forward thinking approach to leadership and
musicianship.
My quartet “TILT” placed 4th
at the Evergreen District Contest and Convention held Oct 1, 2006. I’m working hard preparing for the
District Contest and Convention in Bellvue, Oct 5, 2007 with two quartets, TILT
and TNBT. I also enjoy singing with my wife in our quartet
“Afterglow”, a hip, slick and cool foursome dedicated to excellence
in public performance. I
have also been the proud director of the Green Heart Chorus since March 1,
2007
On a personal note, I work as a Probation
Officer in Surrey BC. My wife Leïla works in the legal
publishing industry and is a front row member of the award winning Lions Gate
Chorus. She also works with the Voices of Harmony chorus as choreographer
and performance coach. I have two children from a previous marriage,
Darin and Shannon, aged eleven and nine.
Both Darin and Shannon are taking music
lessons at the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music, and Darin can already
sing a number of songs from our barbershop repertoire.
My personal goal as the director of this group
is to provide a safe, supportive environment, where each man feels that every
rehearsal is a place where he learns. I hope that every member comes away
from our rehearsals challenged, rewarded and motivated to get the most out of
the best hobby there is!
