The Columbia
River Chordsmen Chapter rehearses every Monday evening, from 7:00 to
9:00 pm, in Kennewick. Directions are below. We welcome visitors,
especially those who think they might like to join us in song. If you
can carry a tune and enjoy singing, chances are you will fit right in.
Even if your singing skills are rusty or you can't read music,
barbershop harmony is a great way to start--or re-start--your singing
passion. We also encourage quartets: they provide an opportunity for
our best performers to entertain at shows and at other special events.
Drop in on any rehearsal. If you have questions, just
contact Bob Steen at 509-378-0451.
The Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) has a great website (www.barbershop.org). It is a
wonderful place to learn about barbershop singing, hear some samples of
choruses and quartets, find out more about the district/international
competitions and conventions! There are about 800 choruses in the
Society around that country with tens of thousands of total members.
There are also around 2000 registered quartets (and a lot of more
informal ones). If you travel around the country there is often a local
chorus that welcomes visitors, and will give you a chance to sing some
common songs that most barbershoppers know. Use the Society
Locator
to find a local chorus ("chapter"), or to find a quartet to serenade
your loved one. BHS also publishes many arrangements for barbershop
choruses and quartets. Songs cover hits from the late 1800s, ragtime,
and Tin Pan Alley eras, as well as great musicals, jazz, rock and roll,
doo-wop, and even current hits. You can browse or purchase them
here.
